KEY INSIGHTS:
Limiting beliefs are one of the most common ways we prevent our brains from actually trying to solve problems. These thoughts tend to stop you in your tracks without any room for negotiation. They’re not questions, so how could they prompt answers? They’re often hidden, unconscious thoughts, but you can start to recognize them in your own mind if you know what to watch out for. Here are some common examples:
“ I can’t do ________ because ____________.”
“ I don’t know how to _____________.”
“ I don’t have enough __________ to do __________.”
“I wish I could do that, but I’m too ____________.”
“How am I supposed to __________ if ________?”
That last one is really sneaky because it looks like a question, but the tone is often rhetorical or sarcastic. So it still stops you from taking action. Notice how none of these thoughts keep your mind open to new possibilities? They actually prevent your brain from even trying to work out a solution! These are the types of thoughts that keep you stuck in the ‘dreaming’ phase.
THOUGHT WORK:
Once you’ve identified your limiting belief statements, you can start shifting those thoughts into open questions like these:
“ How can I do ______ despite ________?”
“ Where can I learn how to ________?”
“What can I do to make it easier to __________? ”
“How would it be possible to _____________?”
“How would someone else do ___________?” (This one can be helpful if you’re getting hung up on your own circumstances or identity issues.)
The magic here is that your brain will actually start to try to solve these problems! It might not happen right away, but I’m telling you, this is one of the most life-changing tools if you actually practice it! You’ll get better and better at coming up with solutions, instead of just telling yourself limiting stories about what’s possible for you.
