Hey imaginary friend, my name is Leigh...
And I’m sorry for the Marketing 101 click-baity title but today I want to talk to you about a platform that a lot of people are sleeping on.
A single platform that is responsible for over 50% of the traffic I get to my website.
A single platform that is easy and fun to use, and doesn’t give me extra stress, and no it is not Instagram.
If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner online, I have absolutely no doubt that you are very familiar with the concept of social media marketing. It is all anyone ever seems to talk about when it comes to marketing your business. BUT that is not what I’m going to be talking about today. Quite frankly, I’m sick of Instagram and I’m thinking about quitting actually and I’ll probably make a video about that later so subscribe if you wanna see that. BUT back to the point, today I want to tell you there’s another way! If you dislike instagram as much as I do, or if you just wanna consider a new marketing channel for your repetoire, I want to talk to you about Pinterest.
Now I feel like you might’ve just gone, “ Ugh” Pinterest? really? The place I go to look for nail art inspiration? How’s that gonna help my business?” or you might be thinking, “ I don’t have time to add a whole other platform to my marketing strategy” LISTEN, babe, Pinterest is the best, let me tell you why.
I have a whole list.
My number one favourite thing about my love Pinterest is that it doesn’t make me feel shitty. Now that might sound weird but let me elaborate. I am the type of person that unfortunately is very susceptible to comparing myself to others. It’s a real problem. And scrolling through Instagram often leaves me feeling FOMO or like I’m falling behind. It is not fun. Pinterest, on the other hand, makes me feel inspired. It’s more about creative ideas and less about focusing on specific people, and that’s what I love about it. There’s no one for me to really compare myself to, because it feels a little less personal. And that’s an important thing to understand: Pinterest is not a social media platform. It is a search engine. So it’s really great for driving traffic, BUT social media is still a great way to connect with your audience on a more personal level.
Pinterest is not about personal popularity or vanity metrics.
It’s not about followers or likes or even comments.
Your follower count does not even matter.
And that is actually one of my other favourite things about Pinterest. You have a fair chance of actually being seen, even if you’re new and you don’t have a large audience yet. If you’re creating high quality content that people are searching for, you don’t have to worry about getting buried by the more popular accounts. As a platform, they’re totally focused around discovering new ideas. It’s literally a search engine. And their algorithm works really well to actually connect your content with people who will be interested in it. And that is so valuable as a business owner because you can create new opportunities for the right people to discover your business.
People literally go to Pinterest when they’re planning to buy something. They’re LOOKING for something and they have their wallets in their hands. You know, if someone is scrolling on an app just out of boredom, they’re not really primed to be super open and receptive to your marketing efforts. But on Pinterest, people are actually expecting to see brands promoting their products and services, they’re actually searching for you.
One of my other favourite things about Pinterest is that
you can be inconsistent and still grow your reach.
You don’t have to have a complicated content calendar and a strict posting schedule. I know that some people freaking love social media marketing, but I am not one of them. I’m a Projector, if you’re familiar with Human Design, you know that I do not have the sacral energy to create multiple posts a week. And also I have ADHD. I get overwhelmed and distracted very easily. And I need lots of breaks, and I am not consistent. Instagram does not love people like me.
But my girl Pinterest values quality over quantity.
And content is evergreen. That means that you can have a really great post from years ago that can still drive traffic to your business today. Now I really don’t wanna turn this video into Instagram vs Pinterest, but I just wanna ask you.
Do your instagram posts from years ago continue to drive traffic to your business?
Do your posts from even a month ago drive traffic to your business?
I have a post from September of 2021, so that was 6 months ago. And that one post still gets around 2000 views on a daily basis — 6 months later. THAT is the value of evergreen content.
And I am not even a Pinterest expert. I use it pretty casually, like once or twice a week. There are plenty of online marketers that put in way more effort than me and have a much larger reach than me. But you can still have amazing results with inconsistent effort, if you’re creating quality content that people care about.
And another amazing thing about Pinterest is that you don’t even have to create new content, especially if you’re just starting out. If you’re new to Pinterest and not sure how it’ll work for your business. You can Pin content you already have. Pin your instagram posts, pin your product images, pin screenshots from your website. One of my most popular pins, that has over 21,000 impressions, and more importantly, has actually resulted in paying clients. It is just literally a screenshot of my design studio website. And it’s honestly not even that good. I’ve updated my website since that Pin was posted and it looks a lot nicer now but that is besides the point.
I am not a full-time marketing expert. That is not what I do. And so when I’m actually busy with client work or creative projects. I don’t always have time to create extra content specifically for social media. And that’s what I love about Pinterest. I don’t have to create anything extra if I don’t want to. I can just share what I’m already creating. That’s probably my favourite thing about it.
Ok that is all I have for you today. I just really wanted to talk about Pinterest, because it honestly does not get enough love. It is my favourite platform for marketing, it’s helped me attract dream clients to my business, and it’s also actually fun to use. So I just want more creative entrepreneurs out there to start looking at Pinterest. And if you don’t already use Pinterest for your business, I’d love for you to let me know in the comments, why not? Or let me know if you have questions about how to actually grow on Pinterest. I might do a follow-up video to this one about actual strategies and tools that I use.
But for now, good bye. Have a lovely day!
